Let’s break down the design process:

Problem definition

Problem statement

Problem statement

Problem statement

Amid rising global awareness of mental health, Mentatt aims to develop a solution to track and prevent mental disorders. The challenge is creating a product that resonates with users and fosters consistent use. The design team sought to uncover user needs and translate insights into a functional prototype, paving the way for Mentatt's first product.

Research objective

Research objective

Understand what attitudes, needs and pain points students, the target users, have towards digital mental health tools.

Method selection

Method selection

The following research methods were chosen to help define the problem:

  • Desk Research: Establishing the current state of mental health issues in Sweden, with a focus on their severity and the existing solutions provided by the government, schools, and workplaces, helped identify the opportunity area for this project.

  • Ancillary Research: By reviewing the client's prior research and consulting another design team that had worked on similar topics, the team was able to refine and solidify its research approach.

  • Competitive Analysis: Analyzing the key features and unique selling points (USPs) of current solutions worldwide strengthened our hypotheses and provided inspiration for potential directions.

  • In-depth Interviews: Considering the sensitive nature of mental health topics and to encourage honest user feedback, one-on-one remote interviews were arranged to gain deeper insights.

The methods are listed in a general time order, but were conducted interchangeably based on needs during actual execution.

Hypotheses based on desk research & ancillary research

Hypotheses based on desk research & ancillary research

Hypotheses based on desk research & ancillary research

Hypotheses based on desk research & ancillary research

1. People not experiencing mental disorders will not have incentives to use this app.
2. A user might need a specific scenario to trust a digital mental health tool.
3. People would expect to receive coaching inside the app.

In-depth interviews with these three key questions reveal what users truly think.

Competitive analysis & findings

I broke down competitors’ key features and display styles, find essential elements. and construct a visualized comparison with competitors’ key features and interface realization:

“I love it so much! Please put it everywhere!” - test participant #5

Let’s incorporate Buddy into sketches & lo-fi screens!

We ensure the app's navigability through:

  • A simplistic layout to minimize cognitive load during navigation.

  • Clear CTA buttons on every screen.

  • Constant testing and iterations.

Through this project, the design team identified and addressed key challenges for Mentatt's first product: 1. The app was reimagined with a more approachable interface, featuring a friendly companion, engaging narratives, and a cohesive UI style. These elements were designed to build trust, boost user engagement, and create a sense of connection by meeting users' need to feel heard. 2. In response to users' negative reactions to the scoring system, it was removed. However, the graph was retained and simplified into a minimalist display of key trends and patterns, maintaining Mentatt’s core function of tracking mental health. 3. The survey was transformed into a more interactive format, replacing the term "survey" with the neutral "check-in" to reduce negative perceptions. The additional daily check-in feature also helps to make habit-building feel more achievable.
