So, what’s the whole story?

Scroll down to read how Buddy, your new mental health guardian, was created.

Let’s break down the design process.

The process is divided into the 2 phases with 3 sub-stages each:

Hypotheses based on desk research

  1. People not experiencing mental disorders will not have enough incentives to use this app.

  2. There is mistrust in professional help for mental health.

  3. People might think that merely answering questions in an app will have very limited impact on their mental health.

  4. A user might need a specific scenario to trust a digital tool.

  5. People would expect to receive coaching inside the app.

However, what do the users actually think?

In-depth interviews help us find that out.

What’s the research objective?
Understand what attitudes students have towards digital mental health tools.

Key questions

In-depth interviews also led to more competitive analysis.

Now, we’re (finally!) ready to dive into design.

The team aims to offer the users with a tool that doesn’t bring extra stress and is trustworthy.

Let’s incorporate Buddy into sketches & lo-fi screens!

We ensure the app's navigability through:

  • A simplistic layout to minimize cognitive load during navigation.

  • Clear CTA buttons on every screen.

Core user flows

Before hi-fi, design system first.

Color

Primary - warmth, joy, and positivity
Accent - harmony, growth, and health
Neutral

Nunito's rounded corners complement the softness of other app elements, while Montserrat is selected for improved readability.

Prototype

What’s next? Future product development recommendations:

  • Conduct usability tests for a longer period on a wide range of users to gather user retention data, and iterate accordingly.

  • Consider communication and system setup focusing on transparency of data handling to help users gain trust in this product.

  • Develop more customizable settings, such as coaching services, to add even more value for users.

  • Integrate AI feature with Buddy to increase interactivity.

Hypothetical metrics: what I'd have loved to track:

  • User Retention rate
As the product focuses on habit building, the primary metric to check would be retention rate to measure the effectiveness of the character setting and daily check-in feature.

  • Task Completion rate
Completion rate of the survey and daily check-in features will show the effectiveness of raising user endurance through interaction design.

  • Daily Active Users (DAU) / Monthly Active Users (MAU)
These provide the stickiness ratio, on which I can base to develop further feature iteration, improving user engagement.

  • Usability Score
Through user testing, the collected usability score can show whether users are able to navigate the product effectively to satisfy their needs, particularly in terms of mental health tracking and support.

What did I learn?

  • Design process is neither linear nor binary.
As designers, we need to adapt and adjust anytime needed to bring out the best outcome.

  • Adequately-structured research plan leads to rewarding interview outcome.
Clear research questions help the interview flow naturally and enables interviewees to open up, leading to fruitful findings.

  • Rapid prototyping and frequent testing generate quick and helpful feedback.

What can be improved?

  • User stories are lacking in this project.
I missed to draw out clear user stories to gain a more holistic view on how this product will be incorporated in users’ daily lives.

  • Quantitative research methods should be incorporated.
Quantitative data, such as user session length, click-through rate, and task completion rate, should be collected.

Client feedback

The client was happy with the outcome, acknowledging our achievement of understanding the users and “thinking outside the box” to provide a prototype as the foundation of their debut product.
